Pete Benson Resigns « Thread Started on Dec 17, 2005, 5:17pm »
I've just heard that Pete Benson has offered his resignation from Preston Harriers. I have no idea why, but I don't think that it should be accepted. Pete is a real grafter for the club and we need more people like him..........not less. I know little of protocol, and often bumble eticate. I'm probably doing this all the wrong way, but we need more Pete Bensons. What can we do about it?

i agree with u bob!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but what i will say is pete you brought this club to its current high standard,i will be interested to see what happens now. over the years pete worked 7 days 24 hours day for all the membership and over that time plenty stepped back not all but some stepped forward but some rode on his effects!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Believe Pete has much to offer and am saddened if this is the case. Pete has said so many times how he loves Preston Harriers and I find this news bewildering. Why Pete?

Sad to hear this. When I left Preston Harriers in1993 its fair to say despite having some very good coaches the organisation overall was struggling. I have seen from a distance over the past few years the improvements made with Pete & others involved. People may feel that one person doesnt make a club & its true, but certain individuals can have a huge influence. For example my own club Salford have not been the dominant force of a few years ago since the departure of team manager Pete Haigh and the untimely death of the President Geoff Doggett. Geoffs death was a massive body blow to the club. Not only did he coach the bulk of the 12 stage winning teams but he was the one person who pulled the different parts of the club together. Not to detract from the work others put in but very few are gifted to have the skills of a Pete Benson or a Geoff Doggett. Notably the once mighty Tipton and Bingley have been less succesful since the losses of Bryan Clifton & Pete Moon respectivley.
I have no idea what commitments Pete has in the 'real' world or if he has a point of principle, but I would urge those of you with influence at Preston to make efforts to keep Pete on board if you wish to see the club maintain its current status

Thank you for your kind comments my decision was a very tough one, all my friends are Harriers but it was based on principles, I still love the club as much as ever. and will be kicking around.

Very sorry to hear that Pete has decided to resign. He has worked tirelessly for the club, and in the short time that I was a member he was always very supportive. Its a great shame that someone who has contributed so much feels that they have to take this form of action.

This is what I mean't when I started the thread. Surely we can refuse to accept Pete's resignation? I would like the committee to bounce it back and try for a cooling off period. I would do anything to help in this matter. Pete Benson is too good a member to lose.

Good idea Bob. The committee could delay accepting the resignation for a month which would give Pete the chance to think about it. Seems a reasonable compromise to me.

The fact that this item has been viewed so many times must mean something! I note for instance that the Haslam Park thread I started, and the Joe Howard cross dressing issue, have both inspired little interest. If I had been a Haslam Park organiser or attender, I'd have added to the thread anonymously if necessary, just to say what a great time was had by all, and that although only a few came, the ones who didn't come were the ones who suffered! Re Joe crossdressing again, has no-one anything to say? Back to this thread though..... the fact that over 200 people have read it ( & that is a big % of membership) means to me that people may not be interested in Haslam Park, or even cross dressing, but that they strongly do care for Pete. What are we going to do about it? Shall I devote that % of the next Harrier to the for & against issues of even getting involved. I know it is so easy to read an item. It is much more difficult to committing your thoughts to writing. May I remind readers that you don't need to be logged in to pass a comment. If you want to, you can say your piece & it will be registered just as "Guest" & no name mentioned!
