A lovely, sunny day yesterday at the Preston Arena (with some red tinged faces at the end of the day!) and well done to all athletes, officials, helpers and parents. Wonderful competition played out in friendly spirit by all the competing athletes with some very good races and good field competition. Overall Preston won the event and results will eventually appear on the young athletes site www.natyal.co.uk/

Well, no replies or further comments, but read a few times... unlike some other local clubs we don`t use this message board much do we?
Good luck to the young athletes in their next meeting at LEEDS on the 3rd June 2007

You are right Steve. Some clubs, not far away have long debates on their message boards. It seems the Harriers are content with everything! Keep on running is their motto.

Sadly we were narrowly beaten by Leeds yesterday, by the small margin of 22 points.
We had unfortunately a few quality athletes missing, due to exams and illness which would have made the difference. Had we been at home we would also have undoubtedly won.
The athletes who did compete put in a fantastic effort and should be commended.
Barring a shock victory at Sale, it look like for the third year running we will miss out on making the National Finals by one place.
Fifth place in in the Premier League is still no mean achievement, when considering the size of the Northern league (89 clubs in total) and the size of some of the cities we compete against.

Error posting above! Yes, a quite fantastic achievement and all the Club should be very proud of what has been achieved, especially so close to eaxms for some of the team. A very close run thing yesterday...Is there a chance though to be higher than 5th.... who knows as in the last round, on the 22nd July: Sale, Gateshead and Leeds are all competing against each other and that should be very interesting.

What an exiting day Sunday was. I am sure if the fixture was reversed then quite a few Leeds athletes would not have made the journey to Preston, the day before Maths GCSE, and we would have won.
My thanks to all the athletes, and all involved, for a great day of sport. Well done.

Steve, as our friend from Leeds points out it's a tough scenario, and whilst with a full team, we have the capability to beat Sale, we will be missing 8 quality athletes to the combined events on the same day.
We have been unlucky to have been drawn away to three of the four major clubs this season, hopefully next season the fixture list will be kinder to us.
On the point of combined events, this fixture clashes with the YAL every season, as we appear to have more combined athletes than any other club, is there anything that can be done to push to keep the fixtures separate next season. This year there are no major events in the two weeks following the 24th June.
Perhaps Pete Hancock, can answer this?

I thought the team were fantastic at the weekend, and yes, each year we seem to get drawn away to the teams we might just beat to get up into 3rd or 4th place. I attended the agm of the league, and I did raise the issue about the clash with Combined events that hits us every year. We do as uka say we should at Preston, and coach athletes in multi events. It seems bizarre that the league sponsored by uka then puts on a meeting the weekend of the schools regional event every year, disadvantaging the clubs that adopt their own preferred strategy. I have been promised they will review it for next year, but review does not necessarily mean change. There are to be a series of 'roadshows' this summer to discuss potential changes to the league, considering changing the selection of events available, time taken, distance travelled etc. Personally I do not object to it being a long day, would not want age groups dropped or events dropped, and would not want a more local league. What do others, particularly athletes, think?
