I just wanted to share what for me was a moment that summed up the spirit of athletics (or at least how it should be) from today's inter-counties athletics at Hull.
Katarina Thompson today jumped 1.80m in the U15 girls' high jump - only 15cm away from the British Senior Women's record. She also won the long jump with 5.46m. Given the right conditions I think she will almost certainly take Katherine Merry's U15 British Pentathlon record at English School Combined Events champs in Sept.
Earlier a young girl from the North East had struggled desperately to cope with the high jump - she was obviously a novice as she wasn't even sure which side to jump from - she tried both! Katarina had done her best to help her out with her run up and advise her. When she went out of the competition, at a height far lower than the other girls were due to come in at, she was very upset , Katarina was the first to go over and console her.
Aidan.

Katarina Thompson sounds like a credit to Preston Harrriers! Lets hope many more follow her footsteps in gestures like this.

I'm not sure Katarina is a Preston Harrier, however two girls that definitely are and have taken the same action to help a novice are Amy & Hannah Lupton.
Amy advised my daughter Alix when she threw her first graded Javelin and Hannah offered advice when Alix took her first ever High Jump medal.
My thanks again to both these girls who are a credit to the club and their parents.
