Just received the recent copy of The Harrier, out of 20 pages just 3 pages of write ups on Track and Field and 2 pages full of pictures. Last time I looked most of Preston Harriers membership is taken up by U 17's. Some Harriers don't live in the circulation area of the LEP and therefore cannot read about their child's successes in the occasional write ups that are placed. What has happened to Young Athletes, Junior league, Inter County, Northern league successes etc etc. Summer is the time for Track and Field. Will the Club Champs not be represented either?? May I suggest that we organize a network of 'reporters'. parents not necessarily coaches as they are busy enough. so that meetings & events are reported and that Val, Bob and his successors can include articles on a regular basis. Any offers to be included please forward them to me.

Sounds a good idea to me! Certainly, if anyone attends a meeting it is worth trying to volunteer somebody to do a report, which should be sent by e-mail to val wallbank on WALLBANKB@aol.com. Val will then send to evening post and harrier, as well as checking we have no duplication (which has happened in the past for things like northern champs!)

Hi Carole Re the Harrier. Everything that was sent to me was printed! I even waited for a short while for Alan Appleby's Russian Report, which came eventually just a little too late. (Something to look forward to).It might be worth mentioning, to my shame, that I stick stuff in The Harrier, not knowing where or from whom the articles are coming. I hardly ever go to the track (maybe once a year), I rarely run in a road race, (maybe once a year in the Preston 10), I do a bit of Cross Country. In fact I rarely leave Riley Green, Mayoral responsibilities you know...... A proper Editor would support or take part in all of the disciplines. Trouble is Time! It really does need exactly what you suggest. That way we could have a truly comprehensive, all encompassing magazine. Then of course that reminds me of one of the committee meetings I attended at which someone suggested that I could put the magazine together in proper sections, say Track & Field, Road, etc.. The someone in question said that if it was done in sections, then they wouldn't have to wade through all the stuff about the Fells! Perhaps each section should have its own magazine. I return to an old potato, we probably don't really need a magazine........the web site should suffice. It would be interesting to research just how many members don't have a computer. The fell section was more or less forced into having its own web site due to my inadequacies. If Chris or myself had more time we could develop the Track & Field & the other disciplines better on the web site. Perhaps someone would like to take a section on? Trouble is Time! bob ps In my reckoning of the 20 pages............. The inside front & back covers are regular pieces, & the back cover supported by Plumbs is a great financial boost to the printing costs. Also there is the help from Conlon, and Sleator & Watson. That amounts to about 3.5 pages. So from the 16.5 pages left there is Front Cover was dedicated to Track Pages 4, 5 & 17 of Track & Field write ups. Centre fold 2 pages of pictures. (I was told that kids like to see pictures!). That's six pages............That's 36% of the mag!!! Not bad really. No but really it's a matter of getting the stuff in to me, then I can publish it.

The idea of parents getting involved in report writing is super as quite rightly at events the coaches are extremely busy with the athletes I am more than happy to take photos for the upcoming Mid Lancs cross Country for the juniors as I will be around If nobody else volunteers I will be pleased to report too
Will also take plenty of photos for the Sports hall when I am not acting as an official
Similar volunteers for Road running and Young Athletes etc etc will help the new editor
MORE VOLUNTEERS PLEASE
I know my son has enjoyed seeing his name in print over the last few years so I am sure there are plenty of others
The club is growing so should the publicity

Volunteers are needed as Colin says... the coaches and the organisers are too busy on the day, especially at Track & Field, although there is a good report on T&F meeting from Aidan in this Harrier magazine and Bob apologises for missing the name of the reporter off. Colin and I have done reports willingly to publicise activities. We`re both parents and also take part in our respective ways. I`m quite happy to keep up with the fell junior stuff, augmented by Colins and perhaps Petes` pictures. I too will take x-country pics, although I may too get a muddy by having a go at some this year.
Do we need the magazine??
Times are changing, in terms of communication but I don`t think newspapers or magazines are going to disappear. I enjoy reading The Harrier, although I can see the viewpoint of moving all communication and publicity to the site... feel it is a masterstroke to have a downloaded version.
Each area has its own part of the site, rather than an actual mag to itself and that seems to work quite well. Sites like ours only work with contributions... there is alot happening.. let`s publicise and help grow Preston Harriers

The simple answer is , if its important to you, write about it, if you don't write about it no one will know about it. The idea of a network of reporters is great, its not new, but its a great idea, its 3 years old but still a great idea so "just do it". Mary had a problem before Bob and all the editors before them its about people not writing then bemoaning the fact that a section has not been represented. It really is up to you, if the youngsters want to have a greater say encourage them to write or to join in on the message boards Val was frustrated on many occasion when Tony Dewhurst had to dog her for articles virtually every week and I finished up writing many of them. If anyone questions that statement I have a copy of every article I have written. Bob/Rick have done a great job. All those who feel unhappy about anything now have the chance to become editor. Remember you do not have to be 60 years old. He/she who dares wins!!!!
Best wishes

Good to see that more & more people are posting on the board. I notice now that we have 104 members registered. I'm sure there could be a lot more to follow. Presently the Harrier goes out to approx 460 addresses.
Cost of print & distribution could be reduced considerably if the 104 (to date) would accept their Harrier on line.
The Harrier could become a part of the website & consequently be freshened up continuously. One area to benefit would be the dates for the diary, which could be updated frequently. Eventually everything could be on-line!
Please treat these idea as just the ramblings of a 60yr old.
Referring back to Carole's excellent idea, the editor of the magazine is a lot happier if articles come as emails & not hand written. Modern technology really has kicked in to touch pen & paper. "Trouble is Time" was my motto at the start of this debate, and the time taken to type out a scrawled letter can be used more significantly elsewhere. (Like the website).

I have thought this for ages, what are the practicalities of the harrier anymore? Technology is booming, we should send them to mobile phones!! Just joking.

Well Carl, joking or not, it probably could be done! Reading through this lot to date it looks like we have 3 volunteers so far. In addition, Aidan Lupton has subscribed articles. I am meeting tonight about the Harrier. Your names are noted! cheers
