Hi, my name is Ryan Gibson. I was just wondering if there were any minimum times needed to achieve to be able to join the 100m squad. I'm looking to train, but am I too old at 18? How much improvement in times can be made through training or improving technique? I feel that with the right coaches I would work real hard and improve alot. In school (Years 10,11) I was running 12 / 12.5 seconds. My most recent time would only be a 90m sprint at college. I was the fastest with 11.13, it was on an astroturf pitch however from a standing start. I know this is a long thread but I would be grateful if somebody could give me some info. Cheers.

Hello! Wow everyone wants to be a sprinter at the moment! Colin is right though Ryan, my dad is the coach. We have a good group at the moment with probably with a bit of luck 3 or 4 sub 11 100 metre runners. However there are a lot of ranging levels in the squad across all sprints (100, 200 and 400 (lunatics). Just e -mail my dad and he will tell you when to come down to the track.
Just a word of encouragement, do not get too dis heartened if you find the training hard at first, so many people come down for two weeks and say 'it's too hard'.
Will see you at the track!

What sort of training is involved? I can only give it my best shot. I will e-mail the coach and see if I can get the chance to maybe come down to the tracks. Thanks guys. Ryan

Well at the moment the training is tough because of the time of season. See, it's winter and we are training for summer.

The training would be really tough for me as I haven't experienced your training before, but I could give it a go and give it my best! lol I have emailed the coach Peter and will see what happens. How much improvement can be made on times by training? and will my age affect the amount I can improve? considering I am currently running, say 12/12.5 seconds.
Thanks guys.

Well it is impossible to say how much training will contribute to your improvement, a lot of it comes from yourself. Your age will effect it is as the older you are generally the harder it is too improve but im 19 and still going strong, as is msot of the group but Sydey (half jamaican) is 24 i think and he only started relativelty recently and he's improving all the time!

Hoping to get down to the track this coming Tuesday. Is there anything I would need in particular? I don't have spikes.

Erm plenty of clothes! Spikes aren't crucial at this time of season!

Not sure of your ages etc. I'm not personally involved with the sprinting, but my advice would be to wander down to the track on a Tuesday or Thursday evening and see Pete Dickinson or Steve James who will give you a bit more info.
If your under 15 you can go on a Wednesday evening to the general session which starts at 6.30.
Spikes are obviously preferable, but if your new to the sport a decent pair of running shoes will do to begin with.
