It is 10 years since I first came over to Oregon to run the H2C 195 mile relay. In the meantime I have competed on 7 occasions and the best a team of which I was a member managed 3rd in the Mixed Masters (O40s - 6 men, 6 women) on three occasions.
I currently run on what is best described as a social team. A group of friends out for a fun weekend. That doesn't mean to say we don't have some fast runners on the team. We just don't take it too seriously. This was the 3rd year I've been running with the Blazin' Trailers. They are are great bunch of people to be with which is very important when you spend 28 hours in the close confines of a van together.
This year we finished 570th out of 1063 in a time of 28:20:29.

A bit of background information. Each team consist of 12 runners who each run 3 legs. Distances and difficulty of each leg vary. The handbook is here.

The best way to approach the relay is for weach team to use 2 vans with 6 runners in each. After each van finishes their stint they have a few hours to shower, eat and rest.
I was a member of Van 1 this year, along with Don and sisters Ann and Carole, all of whom I had shared a van with before. We also had matt and Mike as company. They flew in from Minnesota especially for the relay.
The relay starts at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood and it rapidly goes downhill from there. From 6,000 ft to 4,000 ft in 6 miles!
I ran leg 3. 5.05 miles and 500 ft of descent. It was 82 degrees F and all I can remember of the run was the smell of burning brake drums from the vehicles nearby.
( to be continued)
In the meantime, here are some photos. Unfortunately they aren't in chronological order. I loaded them in 3 batches and the last btch is at the front . Click slideshow for the easist way to view.
