This seemed to be a good idea at the time - my first event as a Vet 55 - a Lakeland Trail Race. The slideshow on the event website gives a number of picturesque views as a further enticement on www.lakelandtrails.org. Well I have to confess I didn't really enjoy the views - despite the glorious weather. I may not have done much racing recently but this was one of the hardest races I have "completed". Today I can reflect on sore feet, delicate ankles and that feeling in your quads - you know what I mean. If anything trying to run downhill on uneven rocky surfaces is the hardest part for us "soft" roadrunners. As for pacing - well I tried but when your mileage splits have varied between 6.41 and 13.35 - I think you've got the drift. A number of Harriers were competing and Phil and Philippa drifted by after about 4 miles offering encouragement. One of those events, really well organised that needs to be respected but as for doing it again. Fortunately for me all the other events in this series are now FULL. There were some excellent performances apart from the times of the winners and in particular Philippa won the Female Vet Open section and Judith Deakin was 3rd Vet Female 60. Other results identified included Ist Preston Harrier - David Holmes 77.08, Philippa Walsh 78.51, Phil Walsh 79.05, Graham Bailey 83.30, Sarah Gohil 86.56, Emma Deakin 97.31, Felicity Cross 103.29 and Judith Deakin 111.31. Well I can put it down to experience - or lack of it
