Alan Appleby completed his first (of many) 100 milers over the bank holiday weekend in 40 hours and a few minutes over 14,000 feet of ascent, although its probably best not to mention feet for a few days. A unsung hero doing another heroic task. Well done Alan. Also Congrats to Mick Mc Loughlan who did the same tough job for the umpteenth time. but quicker The event was marred by the death of one of the runners on the very tough night section.

Rick it was the Northumbrian 100 it was actually 101.14 miles with 14,400 foot of ascent organised by the Long distance Walkers Association. Start and finish was Wooller school set beside the beautiful Cheviot hills. Conditions were good in terms of not much rain but with a very strong and cold wind in the face for most of the time. The night section was very tough up and down and bordering the MOD firing ranges which indicates the remoteness. It was on this section that the fatality occurred I think it was a heart attack not a fall. Alan was a real hero he went around with my wife Christine after I dropped out at Checkpoint 2. 15 miles. Christine finished in 40 hours 9 mins and Alan in 40 22. The final hill was a self clip and caused lots of navigation problems and in the very cold wind hypothermia was an issue.

Thanks.
There are a couple of 100 milers coming up here in the next month or so.
Two of my regular running companions will be taking part. I'll keep you updated.
