Is coaching rewarding YES, Is it challenging YES. Is it Frustrating YES. As a coach the one thing I cannot understand is why athletes train but don't compete. The athletes I help I would like them to compete, most do some don't, can anybody give me an answer?

Bob The answer to the question is that they are excercising(pun intended) their choice. The deeper answer may be other commitments, fear of putting themselves in the firing line or they may just enjoy the social aspect of training. The important thing for coaches to remember, in my opinion, is that nothing is forever, gentle coaxing over a period of time may well see those athletes competing or it may be that a change takes place in family circumstances. A coach should in my opinion be happy to help Athletes become the best that they want to be not neccesarily the best that the coach wants them to be after all this is the philosophy of our governing body. I know this is frustrating for the Coach but why is the coach coaching is it for him/her or is it for the development of people (athletes). I guess there is no harm in it being a bit of both. Hear hear Bob.
Something I have not managed to understand in all the years that I have been competing. Why do athletes train all autumn, winter and spring to decide they will miss meetings such as Northern Mens matches etc in the summer to "save" themselves for one or two meetings? It's rubbish to suggest they may injure themselves, if they've trained the way they should then competition will only make them better and stronger. I really don't know the answer and cannot see it in any other sport; could you imagine a footballer training all summer then only playing 2 matches during the season!!!
Get out there and do what you've been training to do!!

I personally think it all comes down to confidence. Not many feel like they could do themselves justice in a competition.
When I started in the sprints, I thought i was fast, then you see how the others do it and then think man this is tuff.. what the hell would a comp be like! 10x the pressure, everybody watching you. But as you build on your technique and ability, you grow in confidence and then start thinking.. i think m ready to pit my self against some athletes.
hummm....
